I used to own a 'vintage' car for example. so while my machine felt 'new' and functional, it was 'vintage' in their view. To me frustration arose because I wanted to get it fixed right on that 5 year mark. Apple (and all other manufacturers) have to draw a line somewhere. Also the solder used at the time (lead free) wasn't able to handle the temperatures of the computer over time (i.e. Where's anybody going to get a new X1600 chip from? They were old/outdated when the machine was created. for example in my case the X1600 could have been broken.

5 Years out of a modern laptop is really poor!Ĭheers. But a ~5 year old machine that cost ~$3000 when new? Come on!!! I have a Powerbook 520C that still works. If I brought my Newton in and said 'hey this is similar to an iPhone can you give me a repair quote' then I'd accept 'vintage'.

I never can.įWIW what's with the 'vintage' lingo? To me 'vintage' means a Mac Plus or an Apple 2 or something. I even asked about it at the time because many people report being able to get flat rate repairs. I WISH it was $320 flat rate for any Mobo repairs. When the backlight died a few years later I bought a 2nd hand i7 because they tried that BS 'vintage' line on me again. Instead of messing around with Apple I paid ~$100 for the X1600 to be reballed by some dude in the States and installed an SSD in place of the broken optical drive. Core 2 Duo at the time) is not 'vintage'. IMO a 5 year old machine using a generation of CPUs that is a slightly less sophisticated version of the current CPU (i.e. I can give you a quote to repair it, but it will most likely be higher than the cost of a new machine'. To add insult to injury they said 'your computer is is a vintage model so there's really nothing we can do. can you fix this one?' AppleCare had expired by A WEEK and the only reason I didn't take it in to the store was that I wasn't in the country. In 2011 I returned to Australia, took it into a genius and said 'hey I've got AppleCare. the optical drive failed and the X1600 got some cold solder points due to poor design (a well documented issue that IMO should have been a recall). I then lived in Japan for 5 years during which time I took it EVERYWHERE and it slowly started to break internally.

Quite annoying because I bought it in Australia (where the warranty existed). Got a link to this? My experience with a 2006 MBP recently (semi-recently) was that they pretty well refused to touch it.
